Keeping in contact helps. Of course it's never the same as having that person by your side but as long as you can still think of them and keep them in your heart and thoughts then they're never really far away. We love our friends and hate leaving them behind and your friend is probably really sad too! Just show your friend that you won't forget them and that no matter how far they may be that they will always mean something to you. You'll feel a lot better.

Another thing that helps. Think of frogs! I'm serious. When you're little and you catch a frog you love it and want to keep it bu normally parents make you get rid of the frog. You're sad, you may never see it again but you will think about it and hope it's thinking about you (Bad metaphor cause frogs are kinda jerks)  but be happy that it's healthy and living it's life and exploring the world (I broke my metaphor...)
